“Forever True to the White and Blue” is the theme for Homecoming 2007 festivities at Mayville State University, Mayville, N.D. Several Mayville State University alumni will be honored during the annual homecoming festivities scheduled for October 12 through October 14, 2007. In addition, there will be a special commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Mayville State University Athletic Hall of Fame and a reunion of the Tri Vs, a Mayville State campus organization that promoted school spirit in the 1960s and early 1970s.
The 1961-62 men’s basketball team; Lane Freiboth, Great Falls, Mont.; Donna (Johnson) Hutchison, Grand Forks, N.D.; and Patrick Keenan, Orr, Minn; will be inducted into the Mayville State University Athletic Hall of Fame at the annual Hall of Fame Dinner. The dinner begins at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 12, at the Luckasen Room in the Mayville State Campus Center. To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Mayville State Athletic Hall of Fame, the evening will include special recognition of all members of the hall of fame.
Carl Harold Ambroson, Elk Grove Village, Ill.; Dr. Richard Holman, Mayville, N.D.; and Dr. Harvey McMullen, Mayville, N.D.; will each receive the Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Award. Linda Engelman, Detroit Lakes, Minn., and Marlys Hlavinka, Mayville, N.D. will receive the Mayville State Distinguished Service Award. The awards will be presented at the MSU Alumni Association Awards Brunch which is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 13, in the MSU Campus Center Luckasen Room.
Other homecoming activities planned especially for alumni and friends include the opening ceremony of the Smithsonian Institution’s exhibit “Between Fences,” which is on a three-year tour of the United States. “Between Fences” focuses on every region of the United States, telling American stories through diverse fence types. The exhibit, sponsored in Mayville by the Northern Lights Art Gallery, will be located in the Campus Center at Mayville State University October 12 through November 30. North Dakota dignitaries have been invited to attend the opening, which will be held in the MSU Campus Center Foyer, beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 12.
Mayville State Professors Emeritus Dr. James Neilson and Dr. Merwin Lyng will be the grand marshals of the homecoming parade which will leave from the Mayville State campus at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 13, and make its way through downtown Mayville. Student, community, and alumni groups will be represented in the parade. The parade is organized by the Mayville State Student Activities Council. The Mayville State Comets will face the Beavers of Minot State University in the homecoming football game, beginning at 2:00 p.m. at MSU’s Jerome Berg Field on October 13. The MSU Athletic Hall of Fame inductees and Alumni Association homecoming honorees will be introduced at half time.
The Snack Bar in the MSU Campus Center is the site for an afternoon social. Hours are 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
Homecoming day will culminate with an All-Alumni Homecoming Reunion Social from 5:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. at the Mayville Golf Club. A picnic-style supper will be served from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome.
Festivities at the golf club will include a reunion of the Tri Vs. The Tri Vs were an organization that existed on the Mayville State campus in the 1960s and early 1970s. The group was made up of upperclassmen who were interested in encouraging school spirit among Mayville State students. Each year, the Tri Vs raised funds for a scholarship that was awarded to a high school senior who would be attending Mayville State. The Tri Vs could be distinguished on campus by their black and grey jackets.
The grand finale for Mayville State’s Homecoming 2007 activities will be a concert performed by the MSU Concert Choir and Band on Sunday, October 14. The concert will be held in the MSU Classroom Building Auditorium, beginning at 2:00 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public.
