At its regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Monday, Dec. 10, the Portland City Council voted 4-0 to utilize the services of the Traill County Sheriff’s Department to provide law enforcement for the city, effective Jan. 1, 2008.
Portland has been united with Mayville in its law enforcement protection since 1991, and this year Portland paid $39,000 for those services. That cost was going to rise to $43,000 for 2008.
Because of the rising costs, Portland City Council members Tom Geffre and Ed Lenaburg attended a meeting of the Traill County Commissioners and Sheriff Mike Crocker earlier this fall where they explored the possibility of the county providing law enforcement, and what the cost would be.  (more…)

Midcontinent Communications is pleased to support this recently restructured organization that provides food at no cost to needy individuals and families in the area.    (more…)

The University of North Dakota  women’s basketball team is undefeated at 9-0 and are ranked number one nationally in Division II women’s basketball. UND has no trouble breathing in that rarified air as they have been thriving it for years. Mayville State, on the other hand, an NAIA DII team, would love to inhale more of it. And, on December 11, on UND’s home floor in Grand Forks, N.D., the Comets almost gulped enough of that rare air to defeat the bigger school.
It was UND who needed the oxygen down the stretch, but they regained enough poise in the final seven minutes to defeat the upset-minded Comets 73-64.   (more…)

Well, Elvis might have had cause to utter that famous accolade, but after a recent stay in Sin City, U. S. A., I’m not so sure that I echo the sentiment.
Except for a brief layover at the airport a few years ago, it had been well over forty years since I had spent any time in that city. Back then, the action was focused in the so-called downtown, and the number of casinos was relatively small. Now the only thing that looked familiar on Fremont Street was that big neon sign of the cowboy winking.
“The Strip” is where the action is now. Some of the places that people like Frank Sinatra and the rest of the Rat Pack made famous have been torn down, to be replaced by bigger, more sumptuous venues.
